he N&W decided to build a passenger locomotive, which would be second to none, both in service and in flashy appearance. The J class 4-8-4’s filled the role completely.

The first locomotive - #600 – rolled from the Roanoke Shops in October of 1941 and 4 more sister engines were complete by January 1942. World War II hit the passenger service hard, requiring more modern power, so locomotives #605 – 610 were constructed in 1943, though these engines were not streamlined originally, but shrouding was added in 1944 to make them look like the earlier 4-8-4’s.

A third group: #611 - #613 were built in 1950 to pull the streamlined "Powhatan Arrow", an all coach train, the last fine steam train!

It is this third group that is of special interest to us, as #611 is the only surviving locomotive, and is still known and admired by many who remember seeing her in excursion service.

We are expecting our HO N&W class J models by Christmas of 2004, and of course, they will be fully decorated and feature our Quantum™ sound and control system!
