The 2-10-2 wheel arrangement –
also called the "Santa Fe" type got its name from the
AT&SF, since they had such a large fleet of them – about 250
locomotives. The 3800 class was the largest 2-10-2’s on the railroad,
and like most AT&SF power was built by Baldwin. The 2-10-2 was an
improvement on the 2-10-0 "Decapod" type – the trailing
truck was added to help guide the engine in reverse.
One of the 3800’s - #3829 -
was fitted with a four-wheel trailing truck and became the first 2-10-4.
It proved successful and many more 2-10-4 "Texas" types were
built.
The BLI model represents the
locomotives as rebuilt to burn oil.
